Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 16, 2026

Athens ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our writing and document editing application.

Information We Collect

Account Information

When you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from your Google account. We use this information to create and manage your Athens account.

Document Content

We store the documents you create and edit within Athens, including text content, comments, and revision history. This data is necessary to provide the core writing and editing functionality of our service.

Google Drive Data

If you choose to connect your Google Drive, we access your Google Docs files in read-only mode solely to enable importing documents into Athens. We only access files you explicitly select for import. We store your Google OAuth tokens securely to maintain the connection, and you can disconnect Google Drive at any time from your account settings.

Imported Files

When you upload files (Markdown, Word, HTML, EPUB, or plain text), we process them to convert their content into a format compatible with our editor. The original uploaded files are not retained after conversion.

How We Use Your Information

  • To provide, maintain, and improve the Athens writing application
  • To authenticate your identity and secure your account
  • To enable document import from Google Drive when you authorize it
  • To provide AI-powered writing assistance features within the editor
  • To send transactional emails related to your account (e.g., sharing notifications)

Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored securely using industry-standard encryption. Documents and account data are stored in encrypted databases. We use HTTPS for all data transmission. Google OAuth tokens are stored securely and are only used to access Google services on your behalf.

We use the following third-party services:

  • Google OAuth - for authentication and Google Drive integration
  • Stripe - for payment processing (we do not store your payment card details)
  • Anthropic (Claude) - for AI-powered writing assistance features

Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal information or document content to third parties. We only share data with the third-party services listed above as necessary to provide our service. Document content may be sent to AI providers when you use AI writing assistance features.

You have the right to:

  • Access and export your documents at any time
  • Delete your account and all associated data
  • Disconnect Google Drive access at any time
  • Request information about the data we hold about you
